Great Conclusion for the Flying Dutchman World Championship 2022
Flying Dutchman World Championship 2022 - Campione del Garda
11 September 2022 - Campione del Garda, Brescia.
Event with the contribution of the Lombardy Region and the patronage of the Municipality of Tremosine sul Garda.
The World Championships in the Flying Dutchman class ended on 10 September in Campione Del Garda. The queen of the Olympic classes returned to compete in a World Championship on Garda after the one held in Malcesine fifteen years ago and again in Campione del Garda in 1985.
The Flying Dutchman is considered to be the fastest and most elegant dinghy among the classic ones, after years of great success - with successful crews also in Italy - it lost its Olympic status after the 1992 Olympics, but the fleet remained quite numerous.
68 competitors from 3 continents met in the waters of the Municipality of Tremosine sul Garda. The Campione Del Garda regatta field has always been used by high-level boats to compete with the certainty of closing the championship with regular wind.
A total of 10 races took place in 5 days of racing with different winds. We raced mainly with the north wind, sometimes so strong as to limit the conduct of the regattas and force the crews to a forced break.
The preparations with the tonnages and the registrations of the competitors began on September 3rd. 12 nations present. Australia, Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain, the United States of America, Switzerland and Hungary.
The final victory went to Germany with the crews Kay-Uwe Lüdtke and Kai Schäfers of the Yachtclub Berlin-Grünau and the Yachtclub Westfalia Arnsberg. Just a few points ahead of the same Danes who in 1985 at the world championship again in Campione Del Garda had finished second again: Jorgen and Jacob Bojsen-Moller of Club Hellerup.
In third place the crew of former Hungarian world champions Szabolcs Majthenyi and Andras Domokos. The latter was replaced during the championship for the last two days of racing due to a family problem.
To underline the excellent result of the brothers Nicola and Francesco Vespasiani of the Bracciano Sailing Association who finished in fifth place just a few points from the podium. The Italian team proved to be competitive with several victories in the partial results and an excellent final result also for Pincherle-Carincola and Gregori-Gerunzi.
